Log Burner Stove – user guide

Safety

  • Please don’t use “fire logs” (compressed sawdust impregnated with fuel) from supermarkets etc. These are for open fires, not log burners – they burn too hot for a metal stove
  • Don’t leave the stove door open – risk of sparks and logs falling out.
  • The stove will get hot – use the fireguard to protect children and pets from touching it. The top of the stove also gets very hot, so don’t leave anything on top.
  • Place logs in carefully (don’t throw in), use the tools and gloves provided.
  • Only use dry seasoned logs (not plastics or other waste).
  • If the fire burns uncontrollably, close both vents and keep the door closed, to deprive the fire of air. Don’t throw water onto it.
  • Best to wait until the ash has cooled before cleaning out.

Use

  • To start, make a small pile of kindling on a couple of squares of firelighter. Scrunched-up newspaper is also good. Place a small log or two on top. Light with a match. Close the door.
  • Make sure the bottom vent is open to draw air into the firebox and fan the flames. The top vent should be closed, or open a little.
  • Once the logs are burning well, adjust the lower vent (leave the top vent open a little). Add more logs. The ideal is a glowing slow burn with a few small flames. Too much air will produce a roaring fire with much flame, which may look impressive, but will quickly burn the logs and most heat will be lost up the chimney. Too little air, and the logs will smoke and the fire may die.
  • Add another log when the fire burns low.
  • Use the riddle if necessary, to shake the ash down into the tray in the lower chamber, and keep the air flowing up from the lower vent.
  • Please clean out the stove after use. Brush any remaining ash through the grate into the lower chamber; open the lower door and lift out the metal tray. Empty into the metal bucket provided, and/or empty the ash into the small metal bin outside (not the large plastic bins)
